Monash University Malaysia Scholarships 2027 offer funding options for students planning undergraduate, research master’s or PhD study in Malaysia. You can explore tuition discounts for a first degree or research awards that include a fee waiver and living support. Each scholarship has its own conditions, so the right option depends on your course and qualifications. The university has confirmed that GEMS applications for the 2027 intake are open. Below, we explain the main awards, available programmes, documents and deadlines to help you decide which route fits your plans.
This guide brings together several university awards. It is not one scholarship covering every degree with the same benefits. Begin with your intended level of study, then compare the funding available for that course. This will help you avoid preparing an application for an award that does not cover your programme.

Which Scholarships Can You Apply For?
Undergraduate: Monash High Achiever Award
New Malaysian and international students may receive RM10,000 per year in tuition support, divided between semesters. Medicine and Pharmacy are excluded from this award. Eligible admission applications receive automatic consideration; the deadline follows the selected course. Strong accepted school qualifications and a full admission offer are required. Students already in tertiary education or transferring with advanced standing are excluded.
Research Master’s and PhD: Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship
Monash lists 80 awards for 2027. Successful applicants receive a full tuition waiver and a stipend, with RM2,950 monthly listed as the 2026 rate. Support lasts up to two years for research master’s and three-and-a-half years for doctoral study, subject to the award terms. Confirm the applicable stipend in your offer.
Graduate Research Tuition Fee Waiver
This separate research award provides 50%, 75% or 100% tuition support. It does not promise the living allowance attached to the Excellence Scholarship. Consider what you can afford beyond tuition before accepting a fee-only award.
What Does the GEMS Scholarship Cover?
The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship supports full-time PhD study and includes an overseas research period. Malaysian and international applicants can apply.
- Full tuition waiver for up to four years.
- Stipend support over 42 months.
- RM2,950 monthly during the Malaysia period.
- Up to nine months at an approved overseas host.
- RM8,500 monthly during an Australian placement; RM2,950 during Indonesia or India placements.
- RM9,000 grant towards travel, visa and insurance costs.
Registration and amenities fees remain payable. Applicants choose one advertised research topic and prepare a relevant proposal. A recognised First Class Honours qualification or equivalent is required. Contact with the topic’s supervisor is recommended before submission. The official GEMS scholarship details explain the conditions attached to funding and mobility.
Plan for Costs Outside Your Award
Write down what your offer actually pays for. Tuition, accommodation, food, travel and personal expenses are separate costs. A percentage reduction in fees does not tell you how much cash you will need each month.
Make a simple budget before accepting a place. Include one-off arrival costs alongside regular expenses, and allow some room for unexpected purchases. If a benefit is unclear, ask the scholarship office for a written explanation instead of assuming it is included.

Available Degree Programs
The university offers courses across several academic areas. These examples can help you narrow your search; inclusion in the course directory does not guarantee a scholarship place.

Eligibility Requirements
Excellence Scholarship applicants need a recognized First Class Honours qualification or equivalent; the tuition-only research award lists Second Class Honours, H2A, or equivalent. Research selection is competitive and considers academic performance and research preparation. Admission and English requirements also apply.
Look beyond the minimum qualification when deciding where to apply. Your previous dissertation, project work or professional experience should give you a useful starting point for the proposed subject. Explain that connection with examples from your own work.
English Language Requirements
Do not describe these awards as automatically available without IELTS. Check your course’s English requirements linked from your course and confirm which evidence the university accepts for your circumstances. Avoid booking a test based only on another applicant’s experience, since courses and individual qualifications can differ.
Documents to Prepare
For GEMS, the published document list includes:
- Certified academic records and certificates with grading scales.
- CV.
- A 300-word personal statement.
- Proposal for the selected research topic.
- English proficiency evidence.
- Publication evidence, where available.
Other applicants should use their own course checklist. A research proposal is not a general requirement for every undergraduate application.
Use our scholarship application document checklist to organise your folder, then match it against your chosen course’s instructions.
Prepare a Clear Research Application
Start by explaining the question you want to investigate. Describe why it matters, what previous work has established and what your project could add. Keep the proposal focused enough that a supervisor can understand the planned work and judge whether it is realistic.
Your CV should support the same story. Give specific details about relevant projects, methods, software, laboratory work or publications. State your own contribution clearly when describing group work, and avoid presenting unfinished research as a completed result.
Before uploading, open every document and check that all pages are readable. Use consistent names and dates across your records. Keep a separate final folder so you do not accidentally submit an older draft of your statement or proposal.

- Prepare the required files. Work through the course-specific checklist and label documents clearly.

Application Deadlines for 2027
- GEMS: 25 January 2027; enrolment by 31 December 2027.
- Graduate Research Excellence rounds: 12 February, 23 April, 30 July and 1 October 2027.
- High Achiever Award: The relevant course application deadline.
For Excellence Scholarship consideration, your HDR offer letter must be received by the round deadline. Allow time for admission processing rather than treating that date as the day to begin.
Keep a calendar for document preparation, supervisor correspondence and submission. If you are waiting for a transcript or test result, ask the university how that affects your application. A complete file prepared early gives you more time to correct mistakes.
Official information checked on 19 October 2026. Consult the undergraduate award terms and graduate research funding page before applying.
Frequently asked questions

Can international students apply for undergraduate funding?+
Yes. The High Achiever Award includes international applicants who meet its academic, course and new-student conditions.
Does a research scholarship cover a taught master’s degree?+
You should not assume so. Check the course mode and the award’s scope before using research funding figures in your study budget.
