Planning to study in the United States? Scholarships for Canadian students studying in the USA can help you pay for a degree, a research project or a semester abroad. Some awards come from American universities. Others, such as Fulbright Canada and Killam Fellowships, support study between the two countries.

The first thing to check is who the funding is for. A scholarship for a Canadian graduate student may not accept a high school student. An exchange award may pay for one semester, while you need help with a four-year degree. Below, you can compare five options, see the main rules and work out where to start.

Information checked: 16 October 2026. Funding varies. Each program has its own deadlines and conditions.

Can Canadians Get Scholarships to Study in the USA?

Yes. Canadians can apply for scholarships that accept Canadian citizens and for university awards open to international students. Some universities also offer need-based financial aid, which depends on your family's finances.

These are different ways to get help. A merit scholarship usually looks at your grades or other achievements. Need-based aid looks at what your family can afford. An exchange award helps you study abroad for a limited time while you continue your degree at home.

EducationUSA advises students to plan their funding early and apply for financial aid alongside admission. Start comparing costs while you choose universities. Waiting until you have an offer can leave you with fewer choices.

Five Funding Options to Look At

Graduate study and research: Fulbright Canada Student Awards provide a fixed award for approved US study.

Killam Fellowships: Undergraduates at Canadian universities: Funding for an exchange

University of Alabama scholarships: Students starting an undergraduate degree: Merit scholarships

Yale financial aid: Undergraduate applicants: Aid based on family finances

Princeton PhD funding: Doctoral applicants: Tuition, health plan and living support

Use this as a starting list. The right choice depends on your course, budget and academic record. Open each program's official page before you apply.

1. Fulbright Canada Student Awards

The Fulbright Canada Traditional Student Award helps eligible Canadians study or do research in the United States. For the 2027-2028 academic year, the published award is US$25,000 for eight months. Grants begin in September 2027, and applications close on 15 November 2026.

You can use this route for graduate study, research linked to a Canadian graduate degree or an approved independent research project. A suitable US host is required. University admission requires a separate application if you plan to join a degree program.

Who can apply?

You must be a Canadian citizen and have a bachelor's degree before the grant begins. Permanent residence in Canada alone is not enough. The eligibility page also rules out dual US-Canadian citizens, US permanent residents and applicants living in the USA.

There are other residence and program conditions to read. Fulbright Canada also lists a J-1 exchange visa and a two-year home-country physical presence requirement. Compare the full terms with your study plans and budget.

2. Killam Fellowships for Undergraduate Students

Already studying for a bachelor's degree in Canada? The Killam Fellowships Program may be worth a look. It supports a semester or a full academic year at a US university.

The published award is US$6,000 per semester or US$12,000 for the academic year, with a health benefit plan. It is an exchange program. It does not pay for a complete American bachelor's degree.

Under the direct exchange route, you stay registered at your Canadian university and pay home tuition. Under the self-placed route, you register at the US host and pay its tuition. That difference can change your budget quite a lot.

The application rules require Canadian citizenship, full-time undergraduate study and a strong academic record. For 2027-2028, you must expect to graduate in spring 2028 or later. Professional degrees are normally not eligible.

The open competition closes on 31 January 2027. For a direct exchange, ask your university about its own deadline.

3. University of Alabama Merit Scholarships

If you are applying for your first undergraduate degree, check the University of Alabama's international freshman scholarships. Its 2027 automatic merit table lists annual awards from US$6,000 to US$28,000. A separate Presidential Elite package is also listed.

For example, the US$28,000 Presidential award lists a GPA of at least 3.50 and an ACT score of 32-36 or an SAT score of 1420-1600. The university requires official test scores for automatic merit scholarships.

This matters if you are considering a test-optional application. Admission rules and scholarship rules can differ. Check both before deciding whether to take a test.

Ask admissions how it will assess your Canadian transcript. Then check the deadline for your entry term and the rules for keeping the scholarship in later years. Compare the award with tuition and living costs to see what you would still need to pay.

4. Yale Undergraduate Financial Aid

Yale offers undergraduate aid based on financial need. Its policy says that a student's ability to pay does not affect admission, wherever they come from. For admitted students, Yale meets the financial need it calculates, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

This is not a scholarship awarded for the highest grades. The university reviews your family's finances to decide the amount of help you qualify for.

Follow the instructions for international applicants and send the financial documents Yale requests. Your family's estimate of what it can pay may differ from the university's calculation. Admission is also highly selective, so keep other suitable universities on your list.

5. Princeton Funding for PhD Students

For a PhD, look at the funding included with admission. You may find a university package that covers more than a separate scholarship would.

Princeton's PhD funding model provides support throughout regular enrollment. It covers tuition, the student health plan and a base stipend through a mix of fellowships and teaching or research assistantships.

Read the department's requirements and your offer carefully. Ask how long the funding lasts, what work is involved and whether summer support is included. If family members will travel with you, work out their costs too. Do not assume that the same funding policy applies to every master's or professional degree.

Can You Use Canadian Student Aid in the USA?

Ask your provincial or territorial student aid office whether your chosen US school and course qualify. Check this before you add government support to your budget.

Grants and loans are different. A grant generally does not need to be paid back. A loan is borrowed money that you must repay.

Canada's student aid page lists an important change: from 1 August 2026, federal funding stopped for students attending private, for-profit international schools. Some students already receiving aid for the same program at the same school may qualify until 31 July 2029. Ask the aid office how the rule applies to you.

How to Start Your Scholarship Applications

Decide what you want to study

Start with your course, study level and preferred intake. A full degree needs funding that can support all your years of study. Your current university's exchange office can help you plan a semester abroad.

Keep a simple deadline list

Make a small spreadsheet with the university name, award, admission deadline and scholarship deadline. Add the official link and a note about any separate application. It is much easier to spot a missing step when everything is in one place.

Get your documents ready

You may need transcripts, proof of citizenship, a CV, references, essays or financial records. Each application has its own list. Give your referees enough time, and send them details of the award so they know what to focus on.

When you write an essay, explain why the course fits your plans. Use examples from your studies, work or projects. A clear explanation of something you have actually done is more useful than a page of general statements about your dreams.

Check what happens after you submit

Save the confirmation email and check your application portal for missing items. Some awards are considered through admission; others need a separate form. A submitted university application does not always mean you have applied for every scholarship.

Work Out What You Would Still Need to Pay

Compare the total cost after funding. Include tuition, fees, housing, food, insurance, books and travel. Keep the figures in US dollars first, then use a dated exchange rate to estimate the cost in Canadian dollars.

Here is a simple made-up example. A university costs US$45,000 a year and offers US$15,000 in aid. You still need US$30,000. Another costs US$32,000 and offers US$8,000. That leaves US$24,000 to pay there. The smaller award leaves you with the lower bill.

Before accepting an offer, ask what you must do to keep the funding. Check the minimum grades, the number of years covered and whether outside awards change your aid. A first-year scholarship is useful, but you also need a plan for the rest of your degree. For a fuller list, read our scholarship application documents checklist. If your application asks for a statement, our motivation letter guide can help you plan it.
