The study in Sweden 2027 application process starts with choosing the right programme and applying through the national admissions portal. For the autumn 2027 international round, applications open on 16 October 2026 and close on 15 January 2027. Getting a study place, securing a scholarship and obtaining a residence permit are separate tasks, so it helps to plan them together without confusing their requirements.

This guide is for international applicants considering an English-taught bachelor's or master's degree in Sweden. It explains how to shortlist courses, prepare evidence of your qualifications, rank your choices and look for funding. Doctoral recruitment and exchange applications follow different routes and are outside this admissions checklist.

Start with a realistic question: does the programme match both your academic background and your budget? A well-known university is not automatically the best option for your subject. Review the curriculum, assessment methods and entry requirements before spending money on tests or applications.

Sweden 2027 Admission Dates at a Glance

Apply and rank programmes: 16 October 2026 to 15 January 2027.

Submit supporting documents: by 1 February 2027.

Pay the application fee or document exemption: by 1 February 2027.

Check admission results: 1 April 2027 for master's applicants and 8 April 2027 for bachelor's applicants. Studies begin in August or September.

These are the first-round dates in the official autumn admissions calendar. Scholarship providers set their own schedules. The later March-April admission round can leave too little time for applicants who need a residence permit, and fewer English-taught options may remain.

Academic and English Entry Requirements

Master's Degree Requirements

Applicants normally need an awarded bachelor's degree equivalent to the Swedish kandidatexamen from an internationally recognised university. Departments can also require particular subjects or previous coursework. A degree in a related field is not always enough: compare the required modules with your transcript and read the country instructions for your qualification.

For example, an analytics programme may require more mathematics than a general business degree contains. If the requirement is unclear, ask the programme contact a precise question and attach a concise description of the relevant coursework. A strong personal statement cannot replace missing academic prerequisites.

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The general requirements include completed upper-secondary education and accepted English evidence. Applicants whose final school grades were issued after 31 December 2009 also face a basic mathematics requirement. Individual degrees may ask for higher mathematics, science or other subjects. The official bachelor's entry rules explain how the general and specific requirements work together.

Can You Study in Sweden Without IELTS?

IELTS is one accepted route, not the only route. Other recognised tests and certain previous studies can meet the English requirement. For the commonly required English 6/English Level 2 standard, IELTS Academic requires 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5. Some programmes use a different English level, so check before booking a test.

A generic English proficiency or medium-of-instruction letter does not automatically qualify you for an exemption. Previous-study exceptions depend on specific official conditions. Consult these current English language requirements to confirm which evidence applies to your education. Allow enough time for score verification as well as taking the test.

How to Apply to Swedish Universities in 2027

1. Build a Programme Shortlist

Search the official University Admissions portal for your subject, degree level and autumn intake. Open the university's own programme page for every serious option. Keep a comparison sheet with prerequisites, teaching language, tuition, scholarship possibilities and any additional application task. This makes differences visible before you commit to a final list.

2. Create Your Account Carefully

Use an email address you will continue to access throughout the admission cycle. Enter your identity details consistently with your official documents. Keep account information secure and read messages yourself even if someone helps you prepare the application. An agent's verbal assurance cannot replace the status shown in your account.

3. Rank Choices in Your Preferred Order

For master's study, you can select up to four programmes, but receive only one study-place offer. An offer for a higher-ranked choice removes the choices below it. Bachelor's applicants can select up to eight courses or programmes, subject to the admissions credit limit. Rank according to where you actually want to study, not a rumour about easier selection.

Also check whether a university scholarship requires its programme to be your first priority. Finalise the order before the application deadline. Deleting and re-adding choices afterwards can make those choices late applications. The master's ranking instructions explain the consequences.

4. Handle the Fee or Exemption

Most applicants outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland pay an application fee of SEK 900, unless an exemption applies. This is one fee per semester, covering your programme choices for that semester rather than a separate charge for each university. Follow official payment instructions and allow time for receipt.

If exempt, submit the requested evidence instead of assuming citizenship or residence status will be recognised automatically. The application fee and tuition are different charges. Paying the former does not reserve a study place or fund the latter.

5. Upload the Required Evidence

Match your documents to the country-of-study instructions and each programme's checklist. Make scans legible, include the necessary pages and check whether any records must be sent through a particular official channel. Save a local copy of the final documents so you know exactly what you submitted.

6. Submit and Monitor Your Account

Complete the electronic application, review your selections and keep the application number. Check messages and document status regularly. A submitted form can still require supporting evidence. Deal with missing items early, and keep a separate calendar for scholarship forms rather than assuming the admissions application covers them.

Documents Required to Study in Sweden

Academic Records and Identification

For master's applications, prepare your degree certificates and transcripts covering previous higher education, alongside accepted English evidence. Bachelor's applicants need their upper-secondary certificates and grades even if they also hold a university qualification. Identification, translations and submission methods must follow the instructions relevant to your country and situation.

Consult Sweden's official master's document guidance or the corresponding bachelor's checklist. There is no single worldwide document bundle that fits every qualification system. If a page requires a document from the issuing institution, an unofficial replacement may not be accepted.

Programme-Specific Supporting Material

A CV, motivation letter, references or portfolio may be required by a particular programme or scholarship. They are not universal extras for every application. Submit additional material only when requested. A large upload folder is not necessarily a stronger application; assessors need the evidence specified in their checklist.

In a requested statement, connect your previous work with named courses, research themes or practical projects in the programme. Describe your contribution and what you learned rather than filling the page with adjectives. Keep scholarship essays within the provider's word limit, and ask referees early if references are needed.

A Simple File Check Before Submission

Read each PDF at normal screen size, not just as a thumbnail. Confirm that grades and stamps are visible, pages are correctly ordered and names match your application. Keep originals and translations together as instructed. Use clear filenames in your own working folder so an updated transcript is not confused with an older scan.

Scholarships in Sweden for the 2027 Intake

Admission does not automatically include a scholarship. An award may cover part of tuition, the full tuition fee, or a wider package. Compare the actual award terms with your costs. Eligibility can depend on nationality, fee-paying status, academic results, professional experience or your programme ranking.

Swedish Institute Scholarships

The Swedish Institute's Global Professionals programme is a separate funding route for eligible international master's applicants. It is not open to every nationality under identical conditions. As of 16 October 2026, SI says information for the 2027-2028 round will be published on 19 October. Check the official SI scholarship page before relying on previous country lists, benefit amounts or document templates.

KTH Scholarship

The KTH award has a confirmed application period of 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. It covers tuition for eligible one- or two-year master's programmes, with conditions for continued support. Living expenses are not included. Applicants must be fee-paying, rank the KTH programme first and meet the application-fee requirement. Apply to the master's programme before completing the separate scholarship form.

Uppsala and Lund University Awards

The Uppsala University Global Scholarship covers full tuition for eligible international master's applicants, but not living costs. Its next scholarship round is announced for early 2027; exact dates were not yet published when this guide was reviewed.

The Lund University Global Scholarship can cover part or all of tuition. It also excludes living expenses. Lund usually opens scholarship applications in early February, but its displayed 2026 deadline must not be treated as the 2027 deadline. Both universities attach conditions to programme choice and application completeness.

Build a Separate Funding Plan

For every award, record what is paid, what remains your responsibility and how you apply. Check whether a fee waiver includes housing or only tuition. Write scholarship statements for that particular award and keep evidence of the final submission. Competitive funding should be one part of your plan, not an assumption built into every expense.

After Admission: Budget, Permit and Arrival

Understand Your Admission Offer

First-round master's results are scheduled for 1 April 2027; bachelor's results follow on 8 April. Open the offer and messages from the university. A reply is not generally required through University Admissions for the first round, but your university may request a response or other action. Follow its instructions about tuition, scholarship acceptance and enrolment.

Budget Beyond the Tuition Fee

Look up your programme's published 2027 tuition rather than using an old national average. Then list housing, food, local transport, insurance, travel and initial deposits separately. Ask when scholarship payments arrive: an award paid after arrival may leave an upfront cash gap. Build your plan around money you can document, rather than assuming you will quickly find a job.

Prepare the Residence Permit Application

Most non-EU/EEA applicants need a residence permit for studies longer than three months. The usual higher-education route requires final admission to full-time, on-site study, a valid passport, financial evidence and applicable insurance. Any required tuition must be paid before applying. Consult the Swedish Migration Agency's study-permit instructions and obtain the required permit before travelling.

The published maintenance minimum of SEK 10,656 per month applies to applications made in 2026. A 2027 amount was not available on that page at this review. Recheck the figure for your application year. A tuition-only scholarship does not automatically provide the living-cost evidence needed for a permit.

Common Mistakes You Can Avoid

Keep admission and scholarship dates separate. An English-medium degree does not always provide a test exemption, and a first-choice programme should suit your background. Unrequested documents, unread account messages and last-minute fee payments can also create problems. Keep a weekly application review: confirm the next deadline, the missing item and the action needed to resolve it.

Before departure, confirm housing arrangements and arrival instructions directly with the university. Keep copies of admission, funding and identity documents accessible. A checklist is most useful when it reflects your actual offer and circumstances, rather than a generic promise that every applicant follows the same path.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

When should I apply to study in Sweden in 2027?+

The first international round for autumn 2027 runs from 16 October 2026 to 15 January 2027. Supporting documents and the application fee or exemption evidence are due by 1 February. Individual programmes may set additional tasks.

Can I apply for admission and scholarships through one form?+

Usually not. Admission and scholarship applications are separate, even when they use some of the same documents. Each university or funding provider sets its own application process and deadlines.

Is studying in Sweden free for all international students?+

No. Tuition obligations depend on your status and programme. Scholarships may reduce or cover tuition, but many do not fund living costs. Compare the award terms with your full budget before accepting an offer.

Can I study in Sweden without IELTS?+

Possibly, if another accepted test or a qualifying previous-study route meets your programme's English requirement. A general proficiency letter is not an automatic waiver. Check the official rules for your education and chosen programme.

How many Swedish master's programmes can I choose?+

You can select up to four master's programmes in the national admissions application. You can receive only one place; an offer for a higher-ranked choice removes the lower-ranked choices.

Do I pay SEK 900 for every university?+

No. For applicants required to pay, SEK 900 is one application fee per semester, covering the choices made for that semester. It is separate from tuition and must be received by the relevant deadline.

Are Swedish Institute scholarships for 2027 already open?+

As of 16 October 2026, SI says its 2027-2028 application information will be published on 19 October. An earlier year's application dates and eligibility list do not confirm the new call.

Does a tuition scholarship guarantee a residence permit?+

No. Admission, funding and residence-permit decisions are separate. A tuition waiver may leave living expenses unfunded, and applicants must meet the Migration Agency's applicable requirements.
